چکیده

Introduction: An up to 2-cm thick Chicxulub ejecta deposit marking the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundary (Fig. 1) was recovered in 6 holes drilled during ODP Leg 207 (Demerara Rise, tropical western Atlantic [1-3]). High-resolution mineralogical, petrological, and elemental data reveal a distinct microstratigraphy and a range of ejecta components. Prominent features are the uniformity of this deposit over an area of 30 km2, the absence of bioturbation, allowing documentation of the original sedimentary sequence, and the presence of calcite and dolomite clasts next to shocked tectosilicates in the topmost millimeters. These carbonate clasts show in part exotic features obviously related to the Chicxulub impact event.

Emplacement of cretaceous-tertiary boundary shocked quartz from chicxulub crater.

Observations on shocked quartz in Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary sediments compellingly tied to Chicxulub crater raise three problems. First, in North America shocked quartz occurs above the main K-T ejecta layer. Second, shocked quartz is more abundant west than east of Chicxulub. Third, shocked quartz reached distances requiring initial velocities up to 8 kilometers per second, correspond...

THE PRISTINE CHICXULUB EJECTA SEQUENCE AT ODP Leg 207: A MICRO-CHEMICAL STUDY

Introduction: The discovery of high concentrations of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the uppermost clay-rich sediments of the Cretaceous (K) was the key to link the mass extinction at the CretaceousPaleogene (“K/T”) boundary to the impact of a large extraterrestrial projectile, now known to have formed the Chicxulub crater [1]. The true nature of this “Iridium anomaly” as well as of other st...

Rare earth element composition as evidence of the precursor material of Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary sediments at distal sections

The Chicxulub impact event led to a worldwide deposition of impact materials originated from target rocks and the vaporized bolide. Relative contributions of both types of material to the K/T ejecta deposits vary with distance to the crater site. At distal sites (e.g., Agost and Caravaca in the SE of Spain) a major contribution of extraterrestrial material is indicated by different impact signa...

Proximal cretaceous-tertiary boundary impact deposits in the Caribbean.

Trace element, isotopic, and mineralogic studies indicate that the proposed impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary occurred in an ocean basin, although a minor component of continental material is required. The size and abundance of shocked minerals and the restricted geographic occurrence of the ejecta layer and impact-wave deposits suggest an impact between the Americas. Coarse boun...

Innovations in Eds and Ebsd Microanalysis: Hyperspectral Imaging for Planetological Applications Using Silicon Drift Detectors

Within the last decade, silicon drift detectors (SDD) systems have become more and more popular in the field of energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The main characteristic of the SDDs is their extremely high pulse load capacity of up to 750,000 counts per second at good or reasonable energy resolution (<123 eV Mn-Kα, <46 eV C-Kα at 100,000 cps). These properties in conjunction with electron b...
